Spurling a page

"Spurling" a page means saving it to your account on Spurl.net - in essence bookmarking it, but with the benefits Spurl.net has over traditional bookmarks.

Here's how you do it:

  1. Open a web page in your browser.
  2. Optional: Highlight the one or two paragraphs of the page text that you find most important.
  3. Now click the Spurl! button. (Can't find it? Click here)
  4. A small pop-up window will appear showing the title and a thumbshot of the web page and several input fields.
  5. Optional: Fill in the information you want to store with your "spurl". The more information you fill in, the easier it will be for you to find the page again using Spurl.net's search:
    • Title: The title you want to store the page under. This is automatically filled with the real page title, but often it makes sense to change the title if it's not descriptive, is too long, too short or you simply want to store it under a different title.
    • Category: Select a category you want to store the page in. The drop-down list shows all your categories. If you have more than 15 categories, your 15 most used categories will be shown at the top of the drop-down list. To create a new category, select the blank category at the top of the list and then type the name of the new category in the field below. To create a new sub-category, select the category you want to become the "parent" and then type the name of the new category below. The last category you used will be automatically chosen the next time you spurl a page. You can select multiple categories for a single spurl by pressing the (+) link next to the field and then hold the CTRL key while selecting additional categories.
    • Tags: Tags are keywords that you find especially descriptive for the page contents. You can assign as many tags as you like to a single spurl. Use a single space to separate the tags. Tags can be used in junction with, or as a nice free-form alternative to categories.
    • Description: A description of the page in your own words. This field will be pre-filled with Spurl.net's so called "consensus" of the page, if one exists.
    • Snip: A snip of text (a "clipping") from the page. If you highlighted a part of the page text before clicking the spurl button, this field will be pre-filled with the highlighted text. You can also switch back to the page and copy-paste additional snips into this field. It is a good rule of thumb to always highlight a paragraph or two of the page text that grab your attention before clicking the Spurl! button as it is the most efficient way to enter additional information about the page you are spurling.
    • Language: The language of the page you are spurling. The Spurl.net system tries to make a (not-so-educated) guess about the language. If this guess is incorrect, please take the time to correct it. This information is used to filter lists and search results for people that aren't interested in pages in certain languages.
    • Explicit: Is the material of the page safe for children? If not, mark it as explicit. This is used to filter lists and search results according to user's preferences in this respect. If you are marking adult or otherwise questionable content you must mark it accordingly. Failing to do so may cause your account to be terminated. See also our Terms of Use.
    • Protect: Check this box if you don't want to share this spurl with other Spurl.net users. It will be stored in your private spurl library, but the link and all the information you enter about it will be kept from the eyes of others and left out of any data mining done by Spurl.net.
    • Comment: A personal comment about the page, regardless of whether the spurl is protected or not. This information will never be used or accessible by anyone other than you.

    • Tip: Hovering over the question mark next to each field in the spurl window will show a short explanation of what it is for.
  6. Click the Spurl! button at the bottom of the pop-up window.
  7. Now the page is "spurled" and you will never loose it again.
